During their transition to adulthood, young people with childhood-onset disabilities have to develop a range of new skills to adapt to adult roles and manage their own life. Many face difficulties for participating in several life areas, and do not catch up with their non-disabled peers. Young people also have to take on responsibility for their own health and health care.
In this pre-conference we will discuss current knowledge in this field, aiming to encourage future research and international collaboration.
Research findings on a broad range of topics will be presented: from the epidemiology of physical and mental health, participation restrictions, and environmental factors to the (cost)effectiveness of developmentally-appropriate interventions for emerging adults with disabilities. Discussants from different backgrounds will comment on the presentations: persons with a disability or their parents, rehabilitation professionals and researchers. Thus, we will identify knowledge gaps and recommend a future research agenda.
